For PDFs, visible pages and document properties are different

PDF metadata removal often targets document properties such as Author, Creator, Producer, Title, Subject, creation date, modification date, and XMP-style metadata. These are not the same as the visible page text or graphics.

However, PDFs can include many kinds of extra content: forms, annotations, attachments, scripts, layers, signatures, and more. Some of those should not be automatically removed because they can affect the document’s meaning or legal context.

That is why our PDF metadata remover separates supported removable properties from needs-attention signals. We want to clean what is safe to clean and warn you about what deserves manual review.

DOCX, XLSX, PPTX

For Office files, properties are not the whole story

Office files such as DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX can store document properties like creator, last editor, company, application, timestamps, and custom fields. Removing those supported properties should not remove the visible document text, spreadsheet cells, or slide content. But Office files can also include comments, tracked changes, hidden sheets, speaker notes, macros, embedded objects, and custom XML. These may be meaningful content, not just harmless metadata. We report them as review signals where detectable.

What does verification tell me?

Verification means we inspect the cleaned output after the cleanup step. This is important because a tool should not simply say “done” after attempting removal. It should show what was actually found after the clean copy was created.

Our file cards show Removed, Preserved, Audit-only, and Remaining counts. Removed is the number of supported metadata items removed from the clean copy. Preserved is the number kept intentionally. Audit-only is the number of review signals we report but do not remove automatically. Remaining is the number still present after verification.

This makes the cleanup decision easier to trust because you can see both the before and after state.

Honest limits

When can quality or content still change?

Quality or content can change if a tool recompresses an image, rasterizes a PDF, flattens a document, deletes visible comments, removes form fields, or rewrites complex content. We avoid promising that every hidden item can be removed automatically because that promise would be unsafe.

For supported cleanup paths, we target metadata-level changes. For complex content, we show review guidance. If a file is important, always open the cleaned copy and confirm it behaves as expected.

A good metadata workflow is not just about deleting. It is about understanding, cleaning supported data, and reviewing what remains.

Common confusion

Why file size may change even when quality does not

A clean file can be smaller because hidden metadata was removed. It can also sometimes be slightly different in size because the file structure was rewritten. File size is not the same thing as visible quality. A smaller file is not automatically worse, and an unchanged-looking file is not automatically clean.

For images, removing supported EXIF, XMP, IPTC, comments, or text chunks can reduce file size without changing the visible pixels. For PDFs and Office documents, property cleanup can change internal package data without changing the visible pages or document content.

This is why we focus on verification instead of guessing from file size. We inspect the clean copy and report what remains. If the file is important, you should still open it and visually review it.

These modes should not be mysterious. If you uncheck software in Custom mode, software findings should be preserved and reflected in verification. If you use Maximum, every safely removable supported finding should be targeted. If review-only content remains, it should be explained rather than hidden.

Manual review is needed when the file contains visible sensitive information or review-only signals. A PDF with annotations, attachments, forms, or scripts deserves a PDF-app review.
